An important mechanism for development of bilateral relations is cooperation within the framework of “Central Asia+Japan” Dialogue, initiated by Uzbekistan – Japan and Japan – Uzbekistan committees on economic cooperation, which were formed in 1994, playing a major role in development of trade and economic relations. The 13th joint meeting of these committees was held in April 2016, in Tashkent.

In August 2008 Intergovernmental Agreement “On liberalization, mutual protection and encouragement of investments” was signed, which entered into force on September 24, 2009.

10 joint ventures have been established in Uzbekistan, including one with 100% Japanese capital, as well as 13 representative offices of Japanese companies are accredited.

In January – October 2017, the trade turnover amounted to 138.5 million dollars.

The total amount of financial and technical assistance to Japan in Uzbekistan amounted to more than 4.1 billion dollars. Thanks to the financial and technical assistance of Japan, Uzbekistan has implemented a number of socially significant and infrastructure projects in the spheres of healthcare, education, energy, transport, telecommunications and other areas.

Since 1999, regional offices of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), as well as Uzbekistan – Japan Center are operating in Uzbekistan.

Cooperation between JSC Uzavtosanoat and Isuzu Japanese company serve as an example of successful cooperation. On the basis of Isuzu units, about 10 thousand buses and more than 11 thousand trucks were produced. Production of new models of trucks operating on natural gas have been mastered.

Cooperation in cultural and humanitarian sphere is successfully developing. A great contribution to discovery of monuments of the era of early Buddhism in southern Uzbekistan was made by the archaeologist K.Kato, who, along with the former first vice-rector of the Banking and Finance Academy of Uzbekistan T.Kitamura and rector of Waseda University T.Okushima was awarded the Dustlik Order.
