Washington expressed readiness to support Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO

They also talked about the next bilateral consultations being prepared in September with the participation of members of the Uzbek interdepartmental commission on work with the WTO and the staff of the US Trade Representative’s office.

The authorities of Uzbekistan count on the support of the United States in the issue of the republic’s accession to the WTO in the status of a developing country.

This was discussed at a meeting during the visit to the United States of the First Deputy Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan Laziz Kudratova . The parties discussed issues of trade and economic cooperation.

In the course of negotiations with the office of the US Trade Representative, issues of preparation for the fifth meeting of the working group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO, assistance of the American side in assigning the republic the status of a developing country were agreed.

We also talked about the next bilateral consultations being prepared in September with the participation of members of the Uzbek interdepartmental commission on work with the WTO and employees of the office of the US Trade Representative.

Around the same period, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov will visit the United States . He will take part in the Uzbek- American business forum.

At the end of November 2017, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during a visit to South Korea, said that the country had resumed work on joining the WTO. In July 2019, the Uzbek side submitted to the WTO an updated memorandum on the foreign trade regime to consider an application for the country’s accession to the organization. According to the country’s Foreign Ministry, Uzbekistan intends to receive the privileges of a country with a developing economy upon joining the WTO.

In December last year, Uzbekistan received observer status at the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), whose states account for up to 28 percent of the republic’s total foreign trade turnover.

At the end of April, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov and Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich signed a memorandum of cooperation between the EEC and the government of the republic, as well as an action plan for the implementation of this document.
