The 5th meeting of the Working Group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO has started in Geneva

The 5th meeting of the Working Group on Uzbekistan’s membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held on June 21 in Geneva.

The event was attended by more than 60 delegations of WTO member states, as well as representatives of international organizations and foreign experts.

All 25 WTO members, including the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and others, unanimously supported Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO. They noted that it will allow for full integration into the trade system, promote the further development of trade and economic relations with all member states, and intensify the process of expanding the legal system of international economic relations at the global level.

Participants of the event praised the active, pragmatic and well-thought-out policy of liberalization of the Uzbek economy and foreign trade regime implemented under the New Uzbekistan Development Strategy for 2022-2026 under the leadership of the President. They noted that the Strategy is widely recognized and fully supported by the international community.

The results of the efforts made by the Interdepartmental Commission for Work with the WTO in the framework of Uzbekistan’s accession to the Organization, including the preparation of an expanded package of documents and bilateral negotiations on entering the country’s market were praised.

Speaking at the opening of the working group meeting, the Chairman of the Interagency Commission on WTO – Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade S. Umurzakov stressed the importance and absolute priority of Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO as one of the main directions of large-scale reforms in the framework of foreign economic policy of the country.

The head of the Uzbek delegation reaffirmed his determination to actively promote the process of Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO and to conclude bilateral talks with all interested member states in the near future.

According to the agenda, the Working Group will consider the documents submitted on the foreign trade regime of Uzbekistan, including factual conclusions, answers to questions of WTO member states, information on economic policy, measures taken to privatize state assets, customs and tariff policy, agriculture. state support, industrial subsidies began to be discussed.

The Uzbek delegation is also holding a series of bilateral talks in Geneva with the United States, the European Union, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Mongolia and other major WTO members – members of the Working Group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the Organization.
